The Arabian Night
Like many works of antiquity or the middle ages, the arabian nights ( also sometimes -
called one thousand and one nights) is a work by multiple authors, a compliation of
stories, and short stories, some of which are relistic, most of which are fantastic.
During the 8th century, baghdad had become an important trading center for
merchants from the middle east, from asia, europe and africa-and in turn it had be-
came a very cosmopolitan place. Duriing this time many different stories, originally
folk stories, what we might today call fairy tails stories, from the various countries respr-
esented in baghdad, were collected orally over a considerable period of time. A century
later they were collected into a singal book and transulated into arabic short stories. many people
have been credited with that accomplishment; the person most often mentioned is the famed
storyteller Abu abd- Allah muhammed el-Gahshigar. The framing story - of queen scheheraza-
de probably dates from the 14th century, and in this instance the author is unknown. but
the authorship of the Arabian nights has never been so interdting to the world as has the
book itself.
Some of the famous stories are 'Ali baba and the forty thieves' or Sindbad the sailor'.
most of the arabian nights is a hodge-podage- of love stories and comedies and tragedies
and historic legends some are short stories; also included are even some famous religious ( muslim) myths. some
of the stories involve magic and the supernatural; yet within legendary places and fables
there are accounts of those we know to have been real people. but, as there were multiple
authors with multiple agendas, there cannot be said to be a discenible theme.
The stories were first brought to the west in the early 18th century when they were
published in a french translation. the first substantial version in english was published
in the late 19th century. it has become one of the world's most popular lliterary work.
These stories have inspired countless movies and tv specials; they have even inspired
some composers of music. movies badef on The Arabian Nights were realased in 2006 & 2007.
The gifted playwright and director Mary Zimmerman has presented her own staged version of
many of the stories, and her play has been very popular Stories.
